Maury Povich Advances an Art Form

8 11 2005

Honestly, I am not a regular bellyin’ up to the daytime talk show TV bar. I did watch a lot of Price is Right one summer when my aged English prof would have fits of trembling and cut class short. I believe it was the onset of Parkinson’s that was stopping his fascinating stories about hanging out with Dos Passos and crew, and it saddened me. So, I’d go home and watch the price is right and sip coffee and think about my own grandfather. We’d watch Price is Right in the mornings during the summer, too, and he, too, suffered from Parkinson’s. His was much more advanced, awfully so.

In any event, my other experience with daytime TV was Jerry Springer, one of the original crew of shlock TV innovators. Springer was also shown late at night in Chicago as a repeat. In any event, his antics have been surplanted today by Maury Povich. Maury’s topic kept me engaged for a full 5 minutes to see if I really understood the blurb in the bottom right corner of the screen. Today’s show: not the tired old concept of “Paternity test on Steve, my husband/boyfriend, etc.” Today’s show multiplies the concept: “You’re the 9th Man I’m Testing…Are You My Baby’s Daddy?”

Oy.
