As part of that process I had to do some cleaning up of my .htaccess file. This file controls the behavior of your server in handling responses to user agent requests. Like most things Apache, the settings are cryptic, terse, and documented in a language that qualifies as human readable, but only to a very small segment of the human population.

Server configuration not being an especially strong suit of mine, I struggled through a bunch of settings before finally getting it right. Well, I’ll struggle no more. On AskApache.com is this handy and rather comprehensive .htaccess file guide. I especially like some of the tips for allowing and denying IP addresses for development work. It’s a tip I intend to use in the future, certainly.
