We recorded this disk, Ghost Circus, in 1994 with Doug McBride of Gravity Studios here in Chicago. Doug had worked with Veruca Salt, the Smashing Pumpernickles, R. Kelly, and some other big-timers. With stars in our eyes, we began recording in winter of 1994.

Doug was (and is) a great engineer, but we were not a very good band at that time, and we struggled to understand how to use the studio to produce our sound. We played hard and had a great time at Gravity, but we recorded too quickly and produced too soon after we tracked. If there is one piece of advice I would give to bands recording the first time, it is that you should take a bunch of time recording yourself and discovering your band’s strengths prior to paying someone else to record you.

Jeff bought this clown head from a bum for $20 on New Year’s Eve. He pulled off the expressway and this guy was standing on the offramp in freezing weather, trying to sell this clown.
Thomas Wolfe did a 4AD-style cover as our graphic designer, but since we were getting it for free we didn’t complain. I still think it stinks. People tell me the red clown scares them. That keeps me warm at night.

I made this image out of an assortment of modeling clay, christmas tree lights, voodoo components, dollar world finds, and cooky craft store magic. It sat in a cupboard in my kitchen, and I left it there to scare the next tenants.
